Professor Maria Stokes joined the University of Southampton in 2004 and leads the Active Living Technologies Research Group in Health Sciences. Her research interest is in musculoskeletal health, specifically in exercise to maintain healthy joints and mobility.


Maria has a background in physiotherapy and a PhD in Neuromuscular physiology and has a core interest in optimising musculoskeletal health to enable active living and healthy ageing. The themes of Maria’s research include:


  • Understanding mechanisms of musculoskeletal function.


  • Prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions.


  • Enabling active living and maintain of physical independence for as long as possible in later life.


  • Development and application of health technologies to aid research and clinical assessment of effectiveness of rehabilitation.
